Sophos Error 3061

Some users running Windows XP Home might encounter error #3061: "Could not set default updating settings." It is a known  issue with Windows XP Home Permissions. The problem could also result in problems running AutoUpdate after it has been installed, with an Update Log File showing "C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\cache\sau\..\tempsau could not be created."

In order to solve this problem, the user needs to recreate XP Pro folder permissions settings. In order to edit the permissions:

  1. Have the user restart Windows in Safe Mode. Do this by having them restart their computer and hold down F8 during startup.
  2. Once they're in Safe Mode, have them open My Computer.
  3.  Go to Local Disk (C:), and then right-click on Program Files and click Properties. In the Properties window, go to the Security tab.
  4. If the only item you see is "Everyone" with full control, you will need the permissions list to look like this:
                        Administrators - Full Control
                        CREATOR OWNER - None
                        SYSTEM - Full Control
Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
  5. Also, make sure you delete the "Everyone" entry that was there before. To create the different  entries, just click the Add button below the list, type the name and click the Check Names box. Once the entry is created, set the appropriate permissions for it.
  6. Once all of the permissions are set for Program Files, go into the Program Files folder.
  7. Right click on Sophos and go to the Security tab.
  8. Click the Advanced button at the bottom and make sure that the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects" option is checked.
  9. Restart Windows and Sophos should work correctly.
